Brands sourcing hoodies in Europe have a handful of realistic options: Portugal, Turkey, Lithuania, Romania, Bulgaria, and Poland are the most active. Each market has a distinct character — different price points, different quality ranges, different lead times, and different levels of direct access to the factory.
We manufacture in Portugal, so we are not a neutral observer. But we have been doing this long enough to give you an honest picture of how the options actually compare — because the right choice depends on your brand's specific situation.
Portugal vs Turkey vs Eastern Europe: A Genuine Comparison
Turkey
Turkey is the largest garment manufacturing country in Europe by volume. Istanbul and the Aegean coast have thousands of factories producing everything from fast-fashion basics to high-end knitwear. Turkey's advantages are genuine: large production capacity, competitive pricing at scale, strong fabric industry, and decent quality in the mid-tier segment.
For hoodies, Turkey is a strong option if you are producing at volume — think 500+ units per colour — and price is your primary constraint. The challenges: quality consistency can vary significantly between factories, communication is more difficult, factory visits are logistically harder for most European brands, and lead times are typically 6–10 weeks.
Eastern Europe (Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Poland)
Eastern European factories are often positioned as "nearshoring" options — closer than Turkey, cheaper than Portugal or Italy. The reality is more nuanced. These markets have strong CMT (cut, make, trim) capability, meaning they can assemble garments well, but fabric sourcing typically still happens elsewhere (Turkey, South Korea, China). That introduces an additional supplier relationship and potential point of failure.
Quality can be high in the better factories, but the sector is less vertically integrated than Portugal. For hoodies specifically, the specialised knowledge of fleece fabrics, hood construction, and finishing that you find concentrated in the Barcelos/Braga region of Portugal is harder to find consistently in Eastern European markets.
Portugal — Why It Works for Hoodies
Portugal's northern textile cluster is built around exactly the product categories that matter for hoodies: fleece fabrics, jersey knits, finishing, washing, and precision sewing. The country has been manufacturing for European fashion brands since the 1970s, and the accumulated expertise shows in the quality and reliability of the output.
For brands targeting the premium and mid-premium segment — which is where independent labels need to be to compete — Portugal offers the best quality-to-price balance in Europe. Our prices are higher than Turkey on a per-unit basis at equivalent volume, but the quality, lead times, communication quality, and sustainability credentials of the supply chain are consistently better.
The ability to visit is also real. We are 40 minutes from Porto, which has direct flights from most major European cities. Coming to see the factory, feel the fabrics, and meet the people making your product is not a hypothetical — it is a realistic option that most of our clients take us up on at some point.
Fabric Options for Hoodies
Choosing the right fabric is the most consequential decision in hoodie manufacturing. Here is a thorough breakdown of what we offer and when to use each.
French Terry (280–500 GSM)
French terry is a loop-backed jersey fabric — smooth face, looped interior. The loops provide breathability and a slight texture on the inside that is comfortable against skin. French terry does not have the soft pile of brushed fleece; it has more of a clean, athletic character.
French terry is the right choice for:
At the higher end of the French terry range (400–500 GSM), the fabric becomes substantially heavier and more structured. A 480 GSM French terry hoodie has a very different character from a 300 GSM version — more rigidity, more weight in hand, a more architectural silhouette.
Brushed Fleece / Felpa Italiana (260–580 GSM)
Brushed fleece starts as a looped fabric and then goes through a brushing process that pulls the loops into a soft pile. The result is the warm, fuzzy interior that people associate with premium autumn/winter hoodies. Felpa Italiana — Italian fleece — refers to the highest-quality version of this process, typically with a more even, denser pile and superior hand-feel.

The 1100 GSM Double-Layer Hoodie
This deserves its own section, because it is genuinely unusual.
Our double-layer hoodie construction uses two separate layers of fleece fabric sewn together with specific seaming and quilting techniques. The total fabric weight can reach 1100 GSM — roughly three times the weight of a heavyweight hoodie. The result is a garment with extraordinary warmth, a substantial structure that holds its shape, and a significant presence.
This is not a product for every brand. The production cost is substantially higher, the sewing is technically demanding, and the retail price point needs to reflect that. But for brands working in premium outerwear or luxury streetwear, it offers differentiation that is difficult to match with conventional construction. Polycotton Fleece (280–550 GSM)
Polycotton fleece blends cotton and polyester, typically in a 60/40 or 80/20 ratio. The polyester content reduces shrinkage, improves colour retention, and makes the fabric easier to care for. The trade-off is a slightly synthetic hand-feel compared to 100% cotton fleece.
Polycotton fleece is a practical choice for performance-oriented brands, workwear, or applications where durability and washability matter more than a purely natural-fibre hand-feel.
Construction Details That Separate Quality from Commodity
Hood Construction
The hood is the most technically complex component of a hoodie. The key decisions:

Often an afterthought, drawcords are actually a visible brand detail every time the hoodie is worn.
Drawcord tunnel construction matters too — a well-constructed tunnel keeps the cord in place and routes it cleanly through the hood. A poorly constructed tunnel causes the cord to pull out or bunch.

Embroidery
Hoodies and embroidery are a natural pairing — the weight of the fabric supports the stitch density well, and embroidery adds a premium tactile quality that matches the positioning of a quality hoodie.

Screen Printing
Water-based and plastisol inks both work well on fleece. Discharge printing — which removes the dye rather than covering it — creates an incredibly soft print on dark fleece fabrics that has become very popular in premium streetwear. The ink absorbs into the fabric rather than sitting on top, meaning the print moves with the garment and does not crack or peel.
Heat Transfer and DTF
For small quantities or complex multi-colour designs, DTF transfers applied by heat press offer a good result. Not as prestigious as embroidery or quality screen printing, but practical for low-volume or sample work.

What to Look for in a Hoodie Manufacturer
Having manufactured hoodies for brands across Europe, here is what we observe distinguishes brands that get great results from those that encounter problems:
Specify your fabric weight precisely. "A quality heavyweight hoodie" means different things to different people. "380 GSM brushed fleece, 85% cotton / 15% polyester" leaves no room for misinterpretation. If you do not know the spec you want, request physical swatches and decide before placing an order.
Sample in the right colour. A dark navy 380 GSM fleece and a white 380 GSM fleece behave differently in decoration, finishing, and photography. If your launch colour is a specific forest green, sample in that colour — not in white.
Define your construction standards in writing. Hood volume, pocket position, ribbing width, drawcord spec, stitch density — these should all be in your tech pack. What you do not specify, the factory will decide for you, and their default may not be what you had in mind.
Approve your sample before committing bulk. This sounds obvious, but brands under time pressure sometimes skip proper sample approval. A bulk order in a wrong-weight fabric or with a pocket placed 2cm too low is an expensive lesson.
