Overlock
Definition
A stitch type produced by a serger machine that simultaneously trims the fabric edge and encases it in thread, preventing fraying. Overlock stitches (3-thread for edge finishing, 4 or 5-thread for seaming) are the most common stitch type in garment manufacturing — virtually every internal seam in a t-shirt, hoodie, or trouser is overlocked. The stitch allows stretch, making it ideal for knit fabrics.
